Packaging disposal terms are easy to mix together because they all sound environmental. In purchasing and customer communication, however, “compostable,” “biodegradable” and “recyclable” describe different claims. A responsible label starts with the exact product, the evidence behind the claim and the system that will receive it after use.
Compostable
A compostability claim should identify the relevant certification scope and the product configuration it covers. Commercial compost facilities operate under managed conditions that are not the same as a backyard pile. If a product is certified only for commercial composting, it should not be described as home compostable. Acceptance by a particular local program is a separate practical question.
Biodegradable
“Biodegradable” alone often leaves unanswered questions: in what environment, over what time, and according to what evidence? Avoid using it as a catch-all replacement for a specific compostability certification or disposal instruction. Marketing language should not promise a result that the available records do not establish.
Recyclable
Recyclability depends on the material, collection system, sorting process and local market. An item can be technically capable of recycling while still being unsuitable for a local program. Do not direct customers to recycle a food-contact package without checking the relevant local requirements and contamination considerations.
A review process for buyers
- List every component: base, lid, coating, label, wrap and adhesive.
- Collect the certificate, report or declaration that supports each intended claim.
- Verify the certificate holder and scope rather than copying a logo from an old file.
- Check the actual collection or disposal route where the product will be used.
- Use the narrowest accurate wording on sales materials and cartons.
For configuration-specific document requests, read the documentation checklist. For the distinction between industrial and home conditions, see the composting buyer guide. Product questions can be sent via the RFQ form.
