ASTM D6400 is frequently named in compostable-packaging marketing, yet the useful procurement question is not simply “does the supplier mention D6400?” It is whether a current certificate or supporting record covers the exact item and the claim being made. A standard reference, a certificate, a collection program and a product label all play different roles.
What the reference is used for
BPI describes its commercial compostability program as assessing applicable items against ASTM D6400, with ASTM D6868 and/or D8410 applying in eligible cases. That tells buyers to review the certification scope for the actual product—not to assume every molded-fiber item on a website automatically carries the same status.
Questions for a certificate review
- Who is the certificate holder?
- What product, brand, material and components are named?
- Does the description match the selected base, lid, coating and label?
- Is the scope commercial-only or commercial plus home composting?
- Can the certificate be found in the relevant public directory where available?
Commercial processing is not a home-pile promise
Commercial composting facilities manage processing conditions differently from home bins. BPI distinguishes a commercial-only scope from a commercial-and-home scope, and states that home certification requires commercial certification first. Even when the product has the right certificate, acceptance by a local organics program remains an operational issue for the customer to confirm.
Use the claim carefully in procurement and marketing
Keep the certificate in the SKU file and use wording that reflects its exact scope. Avoid turning a commercial certificate into a universal “biodegrades anywhere” statement, or applying a base-only certificate to a complete pack with an unreviewed lid.
Verification step: before approving artwork, compare the certificate holder and product description against the selected quotation, then search the relevant directory where one is provided.
Use the document checklist, read the claim-terms guide, or discuss a selected configuration via contact sales.
